Shakira: Celebrating a Trailblazer in Music as She’s Awarded Latin Woman of the Year

As part of Billboard’s Mujeres Latinas en la Música series, we bring you this tale. Over the past year, Shakira has achieved an astounding feat of securing four top spots on the Billboard Latin charts and breaking 14 Guinness World Records. Additionally, her contribution to music was recognized in a retrospective exhibit at the Grammy Museum. What’s more, Shakira has become a symbol of female empowerment and led a movement that celebrates womanhood.

Shakira, the famous Colombian singer, has managed to turn a difficult year in her life into a triumphant return to Spanish-language music. She has done this by being vulnerable and showing that it’s okay to be vulnerable, and even benefit from it by producing great music. Shakira has already achieved a lot in her career, including having the most top 10 hits on H๏t Latin Songs, the most No. 1s on Latin Airplay and the most entries on Latin Pop Airplay, among other impressive milestones. Her latest success began in April 2022 with the release of her song “Te Felicito” with Rauw Alejandro, which reached No. 1 on both the Latin Airplay and Latin Pop Airplay charts. This was an especially significant achievement as Shakira had not led the Latin Pop Airplay chart since “Clandestino” with Maluma four years earlier.

Next up was the emotional bachata track “Monotonía”, a collaboration with Ozuna that reached the top spot on the Latin Airplay charts and held that position for six consecutive weeks. Shakira concluded her trilogy in January with the powerful “Shakira: BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” alongside Argentine DJ Bizarrap, unveiling her new mantra that women no longer cry but instead, they make money. This track marked Shakira’s first No. 1 on H๏t Latin Songs since “Chantaje” with Maluma in 2016. Furthermore, it made history by breaking 14 Guinness World Records, including the most played Latin song on Spotify within 24 hours with 14.4 million streams and the most-watched video on YouTube with 63 million views in just 24 hours.

Shakira expressed her surprise and joy at the success of her recent song, which she never expected to become a global hit at the age of 45 and in Spanish. She also took the opportunity to show her support for women who stand up against those who belittle them, calling them her inspiration. As if that wasn’t enough, Shakira made history once again with her collaboration with Karol G on the song “TQG.”

The recent collaboration between Colombian artists Shakira and Maluma has been a huge success, topping not only the H๏t Latin Songs chart but also the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts. For Shakira, who has had numerous hits throughout her career, this achievement reaffirms her status as a global superstar capable of transcending language barriers and appealing to audiences across generations and borders. Her ability to consistently produce back-to-back hits is a testament to her talent and appeal. Overall, the success of the Shakira-Maluma collaboration is a testament to the power of music to bring people together and create something truly special.
